 Celebrating Basavanna: The Path of Introspection and Awakening Date: 11th May 2025 • Location: Kalaburgi This soulful initiative, “A Garland of Vachanas”, is lovingly dedicated by my mother, Dr. Vilasvathi Somanathappa Khuba, in cherished memory of her father, Shri B. D. Jatti. 


It reflects the timeless light of Bhakti Bhandari Basavanna’s teachings. Embracing the Journey Within In today’s fast-paced world, many of us feel lost amid societal pressures and distractions. Rarely are we encouraged to pause and look within—to explore our true identity, purpose, and spiritual path. This moment of introspection was at the heart of Basavanna’s teachings. 


Basavanna’s wisdom is timeless. He reminds us that eternal truth cannot be captured by intellect or language. Words are but symbols; true understanding comes from inner experience, awareness, and heartfelt connection. As he said: “ಉಳ್ಳವರು ಶಿವಾಲಯವ ಮಾಡುವರು...” Some build grand temples—but the body, made pure by thought and deed, is the true shrine of the Divine. 


Three Transformative Truths 1. Humility: True humility arises when ego surrenders before the Divine’s vastness. It is not about display, but inner depth. 2. Sanctity of the Body: Our body is a temple—legs as pillars, body as sanctum, head as its golden crown. Purity inside and out—“Antaranga Shuddhi, Bahiranga Shuddhi”—makes it worthy of divine presence. 3. Conscious Work and Awareness: o Kayakave Kailasa – “Work is Kailasa,” the Divine’s abode. Work done with sincerity becomes sacred.


Arive Guru – Awareness is the Guru. While external teachers inspire, our inner awareness remains the truest guide. “Who travels without a guide needs a hundred years for a day’s journey.” 


External help is useful, but awakened awareness is our compass. Transcending the Ego The ego is like fleeting clouds—changing, illusionary. Basavanna urges us not to chase these clouds, but to focus on the vast sky—the self beyond ego. Efforts to mask ego without surrender only suppress it. True surrender alone dissolves ego. 


My grandfather, Shri B. D. Jatti, echoed this truth in his life and words: “Nanage Nane Madari” — I am my own model. This was not pride, but a call to inner accountability. Today, my mother, Dr. Vilasvathi, as President of Kalaburgi Basava Samithi, continues this legacy—through commitment, compassion, and clarity. She now stands as a living inspiration: “Namage Neeve Madari” — You are our model. 


Celebrating Shri Bapu Padmanabha’s Musical Offering We are honored by the presence of Shri Bapu Padmanabha, a gifted flutist and composer. His soulful rendition of 30 of Basavanna’s Vachanas brings alive the emotional and spiritual depths of the Sharana path. These 30 Vachanas: • Inspire deep inner reflection • Promote universal love and unity • Help overcome anger, greed, and envy • Merge devotion with conscious awareness His music kindles “Arivina Jagruti”—awakening awareness in every listener. Each note becomes a step toward inner peace and clarity—both deeply needed in today’s world. 


The Eternal Journey Forward Basavanna urges us to look within. Through Kayaka (sincere work) and Arivu (awakened awareness), even daily tasks become divine acts. “Neene Deva Noda” — You are divine within yourself. May these sacred Vachanas inspire us to live mindfully, merging action with awareness, and nurturing a world rooted in compassion and unity. This sacred event, dedicated by my mother in memory of her father, is a tribute to both their spiritual legacies—blending inner devotion, action, and awareness.

ಅಂಗದಿಂದ ಲಿಂಗದೆಡೆಗೆ - Journey Within

  01 ಉದಕದೊಳಗೆ ಬಯ್ಚಿಟ್ಟ ಬಯ್ಕೆಯ ಕಿಚ್ಚಿನಂತಿದ್ದಿತ್ತು,

ಸಸಿಯೊಳಗಣ ರಸದ ರುಚಿಯಂತಿದ್ದಿತ್ತು,

ನನೆಯೊಳಗಣ ಪರಿಮಳದಂತಿದ್ದಿತ್ತು,

ಕೂಡಲಸಂಗಮದೇವರ ನಿಲವು ಕನ್ನೆಯ ಸ್ನೇಹದಂತಿದ್ದಿತ್ತು.


English Translation Vachana:

Within water's embrace, life's essence discreet,

Veiled fiery spirit in depths, unseen but complete.

Nectar's sweetness, plant's heart, hidden yet known,

Water's flow, life's force, in growth, it's shown.

Faint fragrance lingers, in memory's embrace,

Water cradles echoes, in timeless grace.

Genes bear quests, forebears' yearnings keen,

Peace's essence, in us, serenely seen.

Bhakta: A Journey Supported by the Universe

Within water's embrace, life's essence discreet,

The path of the Bhakta is a profound journey deeply intertwined with the evolution of human consciousness and the rich tapestry of cultural, moral, and ethical development. This pilgrimage extends beyond mere academic learning, delving into the essence of personal growth and enlightenment that every human being is invited to undertake. Influenced by genetics, environmental elements, and the wisdom encoded in the natural world, this journey is a testament to the interconnectedness of life.

In the context of the earlier mentioned passage about genetic heritage shaping predispositions and behaviors, this elaboration adds a layer of spiritual depth. It suggests that beyond genetic influences, there exists a spiritual essence within us that resonates with divine love, guiding our spiritual journey and nurturing our inner growth towards becoming a Bhakta.


The Universal Embrace

As Bhaktas, we are reminded that our quest for higher consciousness is deeply intertwined with the support of the entire universe. The water within us, a vital component of our physical being, serves as a tangible link to life's essence and the sustaining energy that permeates creation. Just as water adapts and flows, our journey mirrors this adaptability, signifying our potential to navigate through the various stages of spiritual awakening.


As Bhaktas, we embrace the support of the universe, recognizing our collective quest for knowledge, empathy, and harmony with all life forms.

02 ಸಂಸಾರಸಾಗರದ ತೆರೆ ಕೊಬ್ಬಿ 

ಮುಖದ ಮೇಲೆ ಅಲೆವುತ್ತಿದೆ. 

ಸಂಸಾರಸಾಗರ ಉರದುದ್ದವೆ? ಹೇಳಾ! 

ಸಂಸಾರಸಾಗರ ಕೊರಳುದ್ದವೆ? ಹೇಳಾ! 

ಸಂಸಾರಸಾಗರ ಶಿರದುದ್ದವಾದ ಬಳಿಕ ಏನ ಹೇಳುವೆನಯ್ಯಾ! 

ಅಯ್ಯಾ ಅಯ್ಯಾ ಎನ್ನ ಹುಯ್ಯಲ ಕೇಳಯ್ಯಾ 

ಕೂಡಲಸಂಗಮದೇವಾ ನಾನೇವೆನೇವೆನಯ್ಯಾ.


English Translation

Walking the ocean of life, with the sea before us, 

Waves of worldly affairs crash upon our weary faces, 

Reaching our hearts, what are the bounds of this vast ocean? 

Reaching our throat, what are the bounds of this vast ocean? 

Reaching above our head, what are the bounds of this vast ocean? 

Immersed in world affairs, without finding the way out, 

Hear my plea, Koodalasangamadeva, who am I, who am I?


Explanation:

Basavanna's Vachana poetically captures the metaphorical journey of life as an ocean, with worldly affairs represented as crashing waves. The progression from the face to the heart, throat, and above the head symbolizes the increasing intensity and impact of worldly challenges on an individual's life.


The repetitive questioning about the bounds of this vast ocean of worldly life reflects the existential inquiries and struggles faced by individuals as they navigate through life's complexities. It speaks to the profound questions about the limitations, boundaries, and meaning of worldly existence.


The concluding plea to Koodalasangamadeva reflects a seeking for guidance, a quest for identity, and a yearning for spiritual clarity amidst the overwhelming currents of worldly affairs. It expresses the human desire to find purpose and direction in life, transcending the transient nature of worldly challenges and seeking a deeper connection with the divine..

03 ನಾನೊಂದ ನೆನೆದಡೆ ತಾನೊಂದ ನೆನೆವುದು. 

ನಾನಿತ್ತಲೆಳೆದಡೆ ತಾನತ್ತಲೆಳೆವುದು. 

ತಾ ಬೇರೆ ಎನ್ನನಳಲಿಸಿ ಕಾಡಿತ್ತು, 

ತಾ ಬೇರೆ ಎನ್ನ ಬಳಲಿಸಿ ಕಾಡಿತ್ತು. 

ಕೂಡಲಸಂಗನ ಕೂಡಿಹೆನೆಂದಡೆ 

ತಾನೆನ್ನ ಮುಂದುಗೆಡಿಸಿತ್ತು ಮಾಯೆ.


When I focus my thoughts, the path too shall hone, 

In this realm of being, such truths are shown. 

I draw it near, and it pulls the same, 

Yet opposing forces mark their claim. 

The struggle ensnares, ensnaring me deep, 

With burdens that weary, causing spirits to weep. 

Yet amid the toil, if I seek divine grace, 

Koodalasangana clears the path, setting the pace. 

In his grace, obstacles shift, revealing the way, 

Guiding my journey, night unto day. 

With forces unseen, the journey’s set, 

In pursuit of the divine, my path is met.


Explanation:

Basavanna's Vachana delves into the complexities of human existence, particularly the inner struggle between consciousness and bodily desires. The imagery of a path becoming visible in the realm of consciousness symbolizes the journey of self-awareness and spiritual growth. However, this path is often obscured by unwanted forces or distractions.


The conflict between consciousness and bodily urges is portrayed as a tug-of-war, where one's chosen path clashes with the temptations and distractions of worldly desires. This inner conflict troubles the soul, leading to introspection and contemplation on the nature of existence and spiritual fulfillment.


Seeking the grace of Koodalasangana, representing divine guidance, signifies the quest for harmony and alignment of one's spiritual and worldly pursuits. The Vachana underscores the challenges of navigating life's journey, marked by unseen forces and paradoxes, requiring constant discernment and wisdom.

04 ಜನಿತಕ್ಕೆ ತಾಯಾಗಿ ಹೆತ್ತಳು ಮಾಯೆ, 

ಮೋಹಕ್ಕೆ ಮಗುವಾಗಿ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದಳು ಮಾಯೆ, 

ಕೂಟಕ್ಕೆ ಸ್ತ್ರೀಯಾಗಿ ಕೂಡಿದಳು ಮಾಯೆ, 

ಇದಾವಾವ ಪರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಡಿತ್ತು ಮಾಯೆ. 

ಈ ಮಾಯೆಯ ಕಳೆವಡೆ ಎನ್ನಳವಲ್ಲ, 

ನೀವೇ ಬಲ್ಲಿರಿ ಕೂಡಲಸಂಗಮದೇವಾ.


To birth, she came as a mother, an illusion so keen, 

In the attachment’s guise, as daughter unseen. 

As a spouse in the union, illusion weaves tight, 

In every role, illusion cloaks the light. 

This entanglement, beyond my own measure, 

Seek guidance, O Kudalasangama, you hold the treasure.

This Vachana by Basavanna reflects on the pervasive nature of Maya, or illusion, which manifests in various relational roles throughout one's life, demonstrating the transient and deceptive quality of worldly attachments.

Illusion as Mother: The concept of Maya as a mother suggests that from the very beginning of our existence, the foundational relationship that nurtures us is also imbued with illusion. It symbolizes how fundamental and ingrained illusions are in our perception of reality, right from birth.


Illusion as Daughter: Representing attachment, Maya as a daughter highlights how our desires and affections, often seen as pure and innocent like a child, can also be sources of illusion. This portrays the seductive nature of attachments that bind us to the material world.


Illusion as Spouse: In the role of a spouse, Maya symbolizes intimacy and the deep bonds that we believe to be real and sustaining. It suggests that even our closest and most significant relationships can be entwined with illusion, impacting our understanding of true companionship and love.


Entanglement in Illusion: Basavanna expresses that this illusion is intricate and pervasive, affecting all aspects of human experience. It's a web that can entangle one’s perception, making it difficult to see the truth behind the visible reality.


Seeking Divine Guidance: The final line is a call to seek the wisdom of Kudalasangama, a representation of the divine meeting point, indicating a place or state where one can transcend these illusions. It suggests that the divine holds the key to overcoming the deceits of Maya, guiding the seeker towards enlightenment and true understanding of reality.

05 ದಿಟ ಪುಟ ಭಕುತಿಸಂಪುಟ ನೆಲೆಗೊಳ್ಳದಾಗಿ ಟಿಂಬನನಾಡಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದಿತ್ತಯ್ಯಾ ನಿನ್ನ ಮಾಯೆ, 

ಟೀವಕ ಟೆಂಬನನಾಡಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದಿತ್ತಯ್ಯಾ ನಿನ್ನ ಮಾಯೆ, 

ಕೂಡಲಸಂಗಮದೇವಯ್ಯಾ, 

ಹೊನ್ನು ಹೆಣ್ಣು ಮಣ್ಣು ತೋರಿ.


You, the master of this cosmic play, 

Guide my steps, leading me astray. 

My consciousness, a flickering flame, 

Your illusions, they fuel the game.

Kudalasangama, divine and wise, 

In gold, allure, and riches disguise. 

But beneath these veils, truth resides, 

Seek within, where illusion subsides.

In this Vachana, Basavanna reflects on the illusory nature of the world and the role of divine guidance in navigating through this illusion. He addresses the cosmic play orchestrated by the divine, where individuals are often led astray by illusions and distractions.


These illusions, while captivating and enticing like gold and riches, are ultimately transient and deceptive.


Basavanna emphasizes the importance of looking beyond surface appearances and material temptations. He encourages seekers to delve deeper, beyond the illusions, to discover the eternal truth that resides within.

  06 ಕರಿಯಂಜುವುದು ಅಂಕುಶಕ್ಕಯ್ಯಾ, 

ಗಿರಿಯಂಜುವುದು ಕುಲಿಶಕ್ಕಯ್ಯಾ, 

ತಮಂಧವಂಜುವುದು ಜ್ಯೋತಿಗಯ್ಯಾ, 

ಕಾನನವಂಜುವುದು ಬೇಗೆಗಯ್ಯಾ, 

ಪಂಚಮಹಾಪಾತಕವಂಜುವುದು ಕೂಡಲಸಂಗನ ನಾಮಕ್ಕಯ್ಯಾ.


Just as dark clouds yield to the ankusha's sway, 

Mountains submit to thunderbolt's mighty play, 

Ignorance bows to radiant light's array, 

Dense forests heed the wind's swift sway, 

And the forest fears the fire's dismay, 

So too do the five great sins dissolve, they say, 

At Kudalasangana's name, in devotion's relay.


Explanation:

This Vachana beautifully illustrates the power of divine grace and spiritual transformation. The imagery of dark clouds yielding to the ankusha signifies how ignorance and confusion can be guided and controlled through divine wisdom and guidance, just as an elephant is gently directed by its trainer.

Mountains yielding to the thunderbolt symbolize the overpowering force of spiritual realization, breaking through barriers with transformative power. Ignorance bows to radiant light, representing the illuminating effect of spiritual knowledge dispelling darkness.


The dense forest heeding the wind's sway signifies the swift and inevitable nature of spiritual transformation when the divine force is invoked. The forest's fear of fire represents the inherent understanding of consequences and the natural response to avoid harm, akin to recognizing the pitfalls of sinful actions and seeking refuge in devotion to Kudalasangana for guidance and protection.

  07 ಮನೆಯೊಳಗೆ ಮನೆಯೊಡೆಯನಿದ್ದಾನೋ ಇಲ್ಲವೊ? 

ಹೊಸ್ತಿಲಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಲ್ಲು ಹುಟ್ಟಿ, ಮನೆಯೊಳಗೆ ರಜ ತುಂಬಿ, 

ಮನೆಯೊಳಗೆ ಮನೆಯೊಡೆಯನಿದ್ದಾನೊ, ಇಲ್ಲವೊ? 

ತನುವಿನೊಳಗೆ ಹುಸಿ ತುಂಬಿ, ಮನದೊಳಗೆ ವಿಷಯ ತುಂಬಿ 

ಮನೆಯೊಳಗೆ ಮನೆಯೊಡೆಯನಿಲ್ಲ ಕೂಡಲಸಂಗಮದೇವಾ.


Within the walls, does the Master reside? 

Or is it an illusion, a veil we hide? 

In the garden of devotion, new grass may sprout, 

But weeds of ego, they only bring doubt. 

These weeds, they grow within the mind's expanse, 

Filling it with illusions, in a deceptive dance. 

The house within, is it truly home? 

Or has the true Master from within us roamed?


Explanation:

This Vachana poetically explores the concept of the divine master residing within oneself, using the metaphor of a house. It questions whether the true master dwells within the house (the body).


The analogy of grass growing in a courtyard symbolizes unwanted elements like ego, false pretenses, and distractions that accumulate within the seeker's mind. These elements are likened to weeds that have no utility in the sacred space of devotion.


The Vachana suggests that when the mind is filled with unwanted thoughts and distractions, it deviates the seeker from the true path of spiritual growth and realization. This deviation indicates that the true master, symbolizing divine wisdom and guidance, is not fully present within the seeker's being.


Overall, the Vachana prompts the seeker to introspect and strive for inner purity and clarity to allow the divine master to reside fully within, guiding them on the path of devotion and spiritual awakening.

  08 ನಂಬರು ನಚ್ಚರು ಬರಿದೆ ಕರೆವರು ನಂಬಲರಿಯರೀ ಲೋಕದ ಮನುಜರು 

ನಂಬಿ ಕರೆದಡೆ ಓ ಎನ್ನನೆ ಶಿವನು? 

ನಂಬದೆ ನಚ್ಚದೆ ಬರಿದೆ ಕರೆವರ 

ಕೊಂಬ ಮೆಟ್ಟಿ ಕೂಗೆಂದ ಕೂಡಲಸಂಗಮದೇವ.


Believers may come, calling out to the faithful, 

Even those without belief, they may heed the call, 

Will Shiva not respond to the sincere seeker's plea? 

Whether believing or not, those who join the call, 

Tell them, loud and clear, about Kudalasangamadeva.


Explanation:

This vachana delves into the nuances of faith and belief in the context of spiritual calling. It observes that believers naturally respond to the call of the faithful, while also acknowledging that some people in the world may not believe or appreciate the divine call. The question posed about whether Shiva responds to the call of those with absolute faith in the divine reflects a deep inquiry into the nature of divine response to sincere seekers.


The vachana also points out that there are those who call without genuine belief or admiration for the divine. In such cases, it suggests emphasizing the message forcefully, stressing the importance of authentic belief and devotion. This emphasizes the idea that true spiritual calling comes from a place of genuine faith and sincerity, which is essential for a meaningful connection with the divine.

09 ಲೋಕದ ಡೊಂಕ ನೀವೇಕೆ ತಿದ್ದುವಿರಿ?

ನಿಮ್ಮ ನಿಮ್ಮ ತನುವ ಸಂತೈಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಿ;

ನಿಮ್ಮ ನಿಮ್ಮ ಮನವ ಸಂತೈಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಿ.

ನೆರೆಮನೆಯ ದುಃಖಕ್ಕೆ ಅಳುವರ ಮೆಚ್ಚ ಕೂಡಲಸಂಗಮದೇವ.


Why fix the world's flaws while yours are unattended?

Soothe your own being, let divinity's light mend.

Nurture your soul, let tranquility rise within,

Kudalasangamadeva appreciates those in their original path, 

away from worldly din.


Explanation

The vachana highlights the importance of self-reflection and personal growth on the spiritual path. It questions the tendency to focus on external issues and the flaws of the world while neglecting one's own inner work. By urging individuals to soothe their own being and nurture their soul, the vachana emphasizes the need for self-care and inner transformation. 


Kudalasangamadeva appreciates those who stay true to their spiritual journey and do not get swayed by distractions or worldly concerns.

10 ನರೆ ಕೆನ್ನೆಗೆ, ತೆರೆ ಗಲ್ಲಕೆ, ಶರೀರ ಗೂಡುವೋಗದ ಮುನ್ನ

ಹಲ್ಲು ಹೋಗಿ, ಬೆನ್ನು ಬಾಗಿ, ಅನ್ಯರಿಗೆ ಹಂಗಾಗದ ಮುನ್ನ,

ಕಾಲಮೇಲೆ ಕೈಯನೂರಿ ಕೋಲ ಹಿಡಿಯದ ಮುನ್ನ,

ಮುಪ್ಪಿಂದೊಪ್ಪವಳಿಯದ ಮುನ್ನ, ಮೃತ್ಯು ಮುಟ್ಟದ ಮುನ್ನ

ಪೂಜಿಸು ಕೂಡಲಸಂಗಮದೇವನ.


Before age etches lines upon your face,

Before life's grip changes your pace,

Turn inward, seek the timeless grace,

In devotion, find your sacred space.


Explanation

The vachana urges us to introspect and seek spiritual growth before the external marks of aging and life's challenges alter us. It emphasizes the importance of turning inward, aligning with timeless wisdom, and finding solace and purpose through devotion to Kudalasangamadeva. The focus is on inner transformation and seeking the divine without delving into the outcomes or results of this pursuit 

11 ನಾದಪ್ರಿಯ ಶಿವನೆಂಬರು, ನಾದಪ್ರಿಯ ಶಿವನಲ್ಲಯ್ಯಾ. 

ವೇದಪ್ರಿಯ ಶಿವನೆಂಬರು, ವೇದಪ್ರಿಯ ಶಿವನಲ್ಲಯ್ಯಾ. 

ನಾದವ ಮಾಡಿದ ರಾವಣಂಗೆ ಅರೆ ಆಯುಷ್ಯವಾಯಿತ್ತು. 

ವೇದವನೋದಿದ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮನ ಶಿರ ಹೋಯಿತ್ತು. 

ನಾದಪ್ರಿಯನೂ ಅಲ್ಲ, ವೇದಪ್ರಿಯನೂ ಅಲ್ಲ, 

ಭಕ್ತಿಪ್ರಿಯ ನಮ್ಮ ಕೂಡಲಸಂಗಮದೇವ.


English:

Beloved of sound, they say, yet not,

Beloved of scriptures, they say, yet not,

Ravana, the composer of celestial tunes, met fleeting life,

Even Brahma, the scripture reader, lost his head,

Neither sound's beloved, nor scriptures', 

but the devotee's beloved, our Kudalasangamadeva.

This vachana contrasts common beliefs about Shiva being the beloved of sound and scriptures by highlighting instances where even great beings like Ravana and Brahma, associated with sound and scriptures respectively, faced mortality and limitations. It emphasizes that Shiva's true essence lies in being the beloved of devotion (bhakti), transcending mere associations with specific attributes. The focus is on devotion as the central aspect of spirituality and connection with Kudalasangamadeva.

  12 ನಚ್ಚಿದೆನೆಂದಡೆ ಮಚ್ಚಿದೆನೆಂದಡೆ, 

ಸಲೆ ಮಾರುವೋದೆನೆಂದಡೆ 

ತನುವನಲ್ಲಾಡಿಸಿ ನೋಡುವೆ ನೀನು. ಮನವನಲ್ಲಾಡಿಸಿ ನೋಡುವೆ ನೀನು ಧನವನಲ್ಲಾಡಿಸಿ ನೋಡುವೆ ನೀನು. ಇವೆಲ್ಲಕ್ಕಂಜದಿದ್ದಡೆ ಭಕ್ತಿಕಂಪಿತ ನಮ್ಮ ಕೂಡಲಸಂಗಮದೇವಾ.


When I proclaim admiration for the divine,

You test my devotion by shaking my spine.

If I claim union with the divine's grace divine,

You test my resolve, subjecting me to life's incline.

You assess my mind's steadiness and my wealth's incline,

To see if I hold firm to the divine, every single time.

Only when I maintain my focus on the divine's shine,

Will I vibrate with the bhakti's resonance so divine.

ನಾಯ ಹಾಲು ನಾಯಿಗಲ್ಲದೆ ಪಂಚಾಮೃತಕ್ಕೆ ಸಲ್ಲದಯ್ಯಾ. 

ನಮ್ಮ ಕೂಡಲಸಂಗನ ಶರಣರಿಗಲ್ಲದೆ ಮಾಡುವ ಅರ್ಥ ವ್ಯರ್ಥ ಕಂಡಯ್ಯಾ.


The sinful wealth, from deceitful strife,

Cleanses past wrongs, yet lacks divine life.

Like dog's milk, unfit for nectar divine,

Unworthy for Koodalasangamadeva's shrine.

ಏಡಿಸಿಕಾಡಿತ್ತು ಶಿವನ ಡಂಗುರ, ಮಾಡಿದೆನೆನ್ನದಿರಾ ಲಿಂಗಕ್ಕೆ, ಮಾಡಿದೆನೆನ್ನದಿರಾ ಜಂಗಮಕ್ಕೆ, 

ಮಾಡಿದೆನೆಂಬುದು ಮನದಲ್ಲಿಲ್ಲದಿದ್ದಡೆ, ಬೇಡಿತ್ತನೀವ ಕೂಡಲಸಂಗಮದೇವ.


When deeds are done, ego must not claim,

The divine echoes, like Shiva's drum's fame.

"Not for the Linga," nor for the Jangama's sake,

Let the disciple's thoughts such distinctions forsake.

Only when devoid of "I" in deeds' domain,

Does Kudalasangama Deva's grace freely rain.

ಮುನಿಯಬೇಡ, ಅನ್ಯರಿಗೆ ಅಸಹ್ಯಬಡಬೇಡ,

ತನ್ನ ಬಣ್ಣಿಸಬೇಡ, ಇದಿರ ಹಳಿಯಲು ಬೇಡ.

ಇದೇ ಅಂತರಂಗಶುದ್ಧಿ, ಇದೇ ಬಹಿರಂಗಶುದ್ಧಿ,

ಇದೇ ನಮ್ಮ ಕೂಡಲಸಂಗಮದೇವರನೊಲಿಸುವ ಪರಿ.


Steal not, kill not, falsehood eschew,

Speak not harsh words, let kindness imbue.

Boast not, judge not, be humble and true,

Inward and outward purity, Kudalasangama Deva does renew.

ತನುಲೋಭ ಮನಲೋಭ ಧನಲೋಭ ಮುಂದುಗೆಡಿಸಿ ಕಾಡಿಹವೆನ್ನ.

ತನು ಮನ ಧನವ ನಿವೇದಿಸಿದವರ ಮನೆಯ ಮಗ ನಾನಯ್ಯಾ, ಕೂಡಲಸಂಗಮದೇವಾ.


Turning away though aware, my thoughts corrupted in dismay,

Lingayya, by greed's sway, led astray from the divine's way.

Offering body, mind, and wealth, as a humble devotee,

O Kudalasangama Deva, I seek thy grace, set me free.

Amidst this vast universe, none smaller than me,

No one transcends the divine, this truth I see.

Your feet, my witness, bear my devotion's tale,

My mind, unbiased, confirms, without ego's veil.

Kudalasangama Deva, you're my ultimate glory,

In this communion, I find my soul's story.

ಬಿಬ್ಬನೆ ಬಿರಿದೆನು, ಬಿಬ್ಬನೆ ಬಿರಿದೆನು. ಬಿಬ್ಬನೆ ಬಿರಿದೆನು ನೋಡಯ್ಯಾ,

ನಾನೊಬ್ಬನೆ ಉಳಿದೆನು. ನಾನೊಬ್ಬನೆ ಉಳಿದೆನು. ನಾನೊಬ್ಬನೆ ಉಳಿದೆನು ನೋಡಯ್ಯಾ,

I shifted, I moved, on and on,

Witness my transformation, O divine, behold this groove.

Broken and shattered, I am scattered afar,

Witness my plight, O divine, behold this scar.

Alone I remain, singular and separate,

See me as I am, O divine, contemplate.

Kudalasangama Deva, I strayed from Your embrace,

Lost in separation, I wander in this space.

ಅಹಂಕಾರಪೂರಾಯ ಘಾಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಆನೆಂತು ಬದುಕುವೆನೆಂತು ಜೀವಿಸುವೆ? 

ಜಂಗಮವಾಗಿ ಬಂದು ಜರೆದು, ಶೂಲವನಿಳುಹಿ, ಪ್ರಸಾದದ ಮದ್ದನಿಕ್ಕಿ, 

ಸಲಹು ಕೂಡಲಸಂಗಮದೇವಾ.


The praises of others, like a golden noose,

Bind me tight, my ego's ego bruise.

In this egoistic living, how can I truly thrive,

As a wandering soul, I'm pierced by their hive.

Remove this noose, this praise that binds,

Offer me guidance, common and kind.

Kudalasangama Deva, in your grace,

Lead me away from ego's embrace.

ಕುಂದಿದೆನಯ್ಯಾ ಎನ್ನ ನುಡಿಸುವರಿಲ್ಲದೆ, 

ಬಡವಾದೆನಯ್ಯಾ ಎನ್ನ ತನು ಮನ ಧನವ ಬೇಡುವರಿಲ್ಲದೆ, 

ಕಾಡುವ ಬೇಡುವ ಶರಣರ ತಂದು ಕಾಡಿಸು ಬೇಡಿಸು ಕೂಡಲಸಂಗಮದೇವಾ.


Alas, unheard are my cries,

In solitude, my heart sighs,

The treasure of the divine lies,

Yet no one seeks, no one tries.

21 ಹೊನ್ನಿನೊಳಗೊಂದೊರೆಯ, ಸೀರೆಯೊಳಗೊಂದೆಳೆಯ 

ಇಂದಿಂಗೆ ನಾಳಿಂಗೆ ಬೇಕೆಂದೆನಾದಡೆ ನಿಮ್ಮಾಣೆ, ನಿಮ್ಮ ಪ್ರಮಥರಾಣೆ. 

ನಿಮ್ಮ ಶರಣರಿಗಲ್ಲದೆ ಮತ್ತೊಂದನರಿಯೆ ಕೂಡಲಸಂಗಮದೇವಾ.


No gold shall I hold within,

Nor worldly riches, not even a thread thin,

Today, tomorrow, my vow I begin,

Seeking only your grace, O divine kin.

ಓಡಲಾಗದು ಲೆಂಕನು ಬೇಡಲಾಗದು ಭಕ್ತನು. 

ಓಡೆನಯ್ಯಾ, ಬೇಡೆನಯ್ಯಾ, ಕೂಡಲಸಂಗಮದೇವಾ.


He who runs is not a linchpin's call,

Nor is the devotee's plea a beggar's fall,

The linchpin stays, duty standing tall,

The devotee surrenders, in grace's thrall.

ಕಿವಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕೀರುತಿ ತುಂಬಿ.

ಲಿಂಗವೆಂಬ ಎಲೆಯ ಮೇಲೆ ವಿಚಾರವೆಂಬ ಹೂವಾಯಿತ್ತು.

ಆಚಾರವೆಂಬ ಕಾಯಾಯಿತ್ತು.

ನಿಷ್ಪತ್ತಿಯೆಂಬ ಹಣ್ಣಾಯಿತ್ತು.

Upon devotion's earth, the guru's seed was sown,

A leaf named Linga gracefully was grown.

Contemplation's bloom adorned its surface fair,

Conduct transformed into a fruit so rare.

The fruit of realization, ripe and profound,

Before it fell, its essence all around.

Kudalasangamadeva, in his divine grace,

Embraced the seeker, in that sacred space.

In this state of Aikya, unity with the divine is experienced, transcending the physical realm. Kudalasangamadeva, the divine presence, lovingly embraces the seeker who has traversed the stages of spiritual growth, acknowledging the seeker's readiness for divine union.

This Vachana captures the essence of spiritual progression, from devotion and learning to contemplation, embodiment of spiritual principles, realization, and unity with the divine, all in a beautiful poetic form.

 25 ಜಗದಗಲ ಮುಗಿಲಗಲ ಮಿಗೆಯಗಲ ನಿಮ್ಮಗಲ, ಪಾತಾಳದಿಂದತ್ತತ್ತ ನಿಮ್ಮ ಶ್ರೀಚರಣ, ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಾಂಡದಿಂದತ್ತತ್ತ ನಿಮ್ಮ ಶ್ರೀಮಕುಟ,ಅಪ್ರಮಾಣ ಅಗಮ್ಯ ಅಗೋಚರ ಅಪ್ರತಿಮ ಲಿಂಗವೆ ಕೂಡಲಸಂಗಮದೇವಯ್ಯಾ, ಎನ್ನ ಕರಸ್ಥಲಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದು ಚುಳುಕಾದಿರಯ್ಯಾ.


The vast expanse of sky, the unseen cosmic veil,

Your presence fills the heavens, where stars and dreams sail.

Your feet reach the depths, to ravines unseen,

Your crown graces the cosmos, where no man's been.

Invisible, unmatched, divine essence so grand,

Kudalasangamadeva,   beyond sea and land.

In my palm, you now reside, a sacred light,

Revealing your presence, both day and night.

Cosmic Crown: The divine face is beyond the known universe, indicating that the divine encompasses both the micro and the macro realms. This suggests that the divine is present in both the vastness of the cosmos and the minutiae of life, bridging the gap between the immense and the minute.


In this state, the devotee recognizes:

Invisible and Unmatched: The divine is invisible, beyond human perception, and unparalleled. The devotee understands that the divine essence cannot be fully grasped by the human senses, remaining a profound mystery.

Kudalasangamadeva's Manifestation: Although the divine consciousness manifests everywhere, including within the seeker, it also takes a form that fits within the devotee's palm. This symbolizes the divine's desire to elevate the awareness of a true seeker, making the divine presence more tangible and personal.


This Vachana by Basavanna emphasizes the journey of the seeker, focusing on their recognition of the omnipresence and the intimate manifestation of the divine.

26 ಪುಣ್ಯಪಾಪವೆಂಬ ಉಭಯಕರ್ಮವನಾರು ಬಲ್ಲರಯ್ಯಾ? ಇವನಾರುಂಬರು? ಕಾಯ ತಾನುಂಬಡೆ ಕಾಯ ಮಣ್ಣು,ಜೀವ ತಾನುಂಬಡೆ ಜೀವ ಬಯಲು, ಈ ಉಭಯನಿರ್ಣಯವ ಕೂಡಲಸಂಗಮದೇವಾ, ನಿಮ್ಮ ಶರಣ ಬಲ್ಲ.


Who truly discerns between sin and grace?

Who is worthy of this divine embrace?

Is it the body's earthly race,

Or the soul's quest for spiritual space?

In this debate's intricate maze,

Only Kudalasangamadeva's true devotee, with grace,

Can find the path to truth's embrace,

Where all queries find their resting place.

27 ಮಣ್ಣ ಮಡಕೆ ಮಣ್ಣಾಗದು ಕ್ರೀಯಳಿದು, ಬೆಣ್ಣೆ ಕರಗಿ ತುಪ್ಪವಾಗಿ ಮರಳಿ ಬೆಣ್ಣೆಯಾಗದು ಕ್ರೀಯಳಿದು, ಹೊನ್ನ ಕಬ್ಬುನವಾಗದು ಕ್ರೀಯಳಿದು, ಮುತ್ತು ನೀರಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಟ್ಟಿ ಮತ್ತೆ ನೀರಾಗದು ಕ್ರೀಯಳಿದು, ಕೂಡಲಸಂಗನ ಶರಣನಾಗಿ ಮರಳಿ ಮಾನವನಾಗನು ಕ್ರೀಯಳಿದು.


Soil shaped into clay, can't return to its primal state,

Butter turned to ghee, forever in a transformed fate,

Gold refined from ore, never reverts to its initial rate,

Pearl from the sea, not water but a unique trait.

In Kudalasangamadeva's embrace, a soul does transform,

No more mere human, but divine in every norm,

Old identities shed, with grace they do conform,

A journey profound, in the divine's eternal dorm.

As a seeker, know this truth well,

Your journey unfolds with continuous spell,

No quantum leap, but step by step you dwell,

In devotion's path, your awareness will swell.


Intellection's effects will prevail,

But gradually, not in a sudden gale,

Each step forward, your wisdom's trail,

Unfolding slowly, like a timeless tale.


Realizing the state of surrender, you'll sail,

Slowly, surely, without haste or fail,

In this realm of journey, you'll unveil,

The essence of devotion, beyond the veil.


Known as Lingaikya, beyond worldly frail,

Realized soul, who has crossed the worldly trail,

Yet remember, it's a slow process, without a wail,

In merging with the divine, devotion's tale.


Kudalasangamadeva, you'll proceed to be known,

Merged with the divine, in devotion sown,

Awareness is the basis, in this journey prone,

Slow and steady, your spiritual growth is honed.

29 ಬಯಲ ರೂಪ ಮಾಡಬಲ್ಲಾತನೆ ಶರಣನು, ಆ ರೂಪ ಬಯಲ ಮಾಡಬಲ್ಲಾತನೆ ಲಿಂಗಾನುಭಾವಿ. ಬಯಲ ರೂಪ ಮಾಡಲರಿಯದಿದ್ದಡೆ ಎಂತು ಶರಣನೆಂಬೆ? ಆ ರೂಪ ಬಯಲು ಮಾಡಲರಿಯದಿದ್ದಡೆ ಎಂತು ಲಿಂಗಾನುಭಾವಿಯೆಂಬೆ? ಈ ಉಭಯ ಒಂದಾದಡೆ ನಿಮ್ಮಲ್ಲಿ ತೆರಹುಂಟೆ ಕೂಡಲಸಂಗಮದೇವಾ?


A devotee, holding the outer Linga in embrace,

Is known as a Sharana, seeking divine grace.

Yet, beyond this form, the Linga's true embrace,

Is the Linganubhavi, merging in cosmic space.


If one stays fixed on the physical Linga's face,

How can they be known as the Sharana's trace?

For the true seeker moves beyond this base,

Into the Linganubhavi's all-encompassing grace.


Without transcending the physical, the seeker's place,

How can we know they've touched the divine's face?

When within and without merge in sacred grace,

Kudalasangamadeva, this union you embrace.


In the union of observer and observed's maze,

Lies the essence of Sharana, in divine's embrace.

Beyond limitations, in Linga's boundless space,

You guide us to transcend, in divine's embrace.

ಏನೆಂಬೆ, ಏನೆಂಬೆ ಎರಡೊಂದಾದುದ? ಏನೆಂಬೆ, ಏನೆಂಬೆ ಅವಿರಳ ಘನವ?

ಮಹಾದಾನಿ ಕೂಡಲಸಂಗಮದೇವಯ್ಯ ತಾನೆ ಬಲ್ಲಯ್ಯ.


What is this, what is this, a questioning swirls around?

In the essence of truth, how does duality abound?

What is this, what is this, a merging of the two?

When 'I' and 'You' unite, what does the experience construe?

What is this, what is this, the unbreakable unity?

The eternal truth, singular, in its vast serenity.

Only the divine, the great bestower of all,

Knows the essence of this unifying call.
